Rock Music – Why it Sucks Nowadays
The state of rock music, in my opinion, has been steadily on the decline since about 1988. Guns ‘N Roses blazed a “never again-walked” trail of rock that I have been missing for 20 years.
Recently, I began reviewing music for a site run by Keith Hannaleck called MuzikReviews.com and have heard a few progressive rock albums there, as well as my personal music collection. Together, they amount to nothing impressive as far as rock music. One album, Demians, was an epic-long song that didn’t change themes and wasn’t really rock-y. There were some tasty guitar sections, but nothing that rocked.
Guns ‘N Roses’ (Re: Axl Roses’) new album does rock; but I miss the old crew. After all the drama with changing guitarists and the trouble with old bandmates, this band reminds me of Van Halen, who also hasn’t done anything worthwhile in the last 20 years, and who continues to be accloaded by guitar magazines. There should be a quota to be featured in instrument magazines, that an artist must have contributed SOMETHING to improve the state of the music in the last 10 years. If not, forget ‘em.
It’s sad, really. I’m tired of listening to freakin’ Coldplay, Nickelback, and other various sucking bands of the last 5 years or so. Living in Germany also makes my musical selection somewhat more challenged from those in the US, but the state of Rock Music is in the shithouse – and I’m doing the best I can with my own music to change that.
